Tristan Jarry made 19 saves as the Edmonton Oilers skated to a 3-1 win against the host San Jose Sharks on Saturday afternoon.
Mattias Ekholm, Vasily Podkolzin and Alex Formenton scored while Connor McDavid increased his early-season points total to 13 with an assist for the Oilers, who have won four straight games since dropping their season opener to the Vancouver Canucks.
Macklin Celebrini’s first goal of the season was the lone score for the Sharks, who have dropped two of their last three. Celebrini, who missed two games with a lower-body injury, led San Jose with 21:59 of ice time and placed three shots on goal. Yaroslav Askarov made 17 saves.
Ekholm put Edmonton up 1-0 at 12:37 of the first period. Isaac Howard set Ekholm up for a slap shot through traffic from between the face-off circles.
San Jose and Edmonton each had five shots on goal in the first frame, while the Sharks out-hit the Oilers 17-7.
The Oilers didn’t register a shot on goal in the second period until 6:09 remained. Celebrini almost tied the game 1-1 with five seconds left in the frame, but his shot rang off the post.
Podkolzin increased Edmonton’s lead to 2-0 at 3:13 of the third period. After an Oilers power play expired, McDavid set Podkolzin up with a backward pass and the winger scored on a slap shot.
Formenton added to Edmonton’s tally with a backhanded shot past Askarov to make the score 3-0 at 5:40.
Celebrini put the Sharks on the board 3-1 at 11:19. Michael Misa set up the goal with a backhanded pass from against the boards and Celebrini scored on a wrist shot.
