Terrence Brown poured in 21 points in 18 minutes as North Carolina dominated at both ends of the court in a 109-70 nonconference victory over Wofford on Friday night in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Jaydon Young’s 15 points, Alex Samodurov’s 13 points and Maximo Adams’ 11 points all came off the bench as the Tar Heels (2-0) led by double figures for the final 34-plus minutes. Jarin Stevenson pitched in 10 points while Young hit four of the team’s 10 3-point baskets.
Cutter Sisk paced Wofford (0-2) with 27 points and seven rebounds off the bench while Jyi Dawkins added 13 points and six rebounds. Wofford’s starters combined for just 26 points on 7-for-29 shooting.
The Terriers (0-2), who lost three nights earlier at No. 8 Tennessee in a game that had a three-point halftime margin, shot 33.3% from the field including a 7-for-25 mark on 3-point attempts.
Nine different Tar Heels had at least two points in the first 11 minutes as they built a 31-15 lead. Brown had 12 first-half points as North Carolina built a 51-34 lead at the break. He finished 7-for-11 from the field.
Brown’s seven points were part of North Carolina’s 16-7 burst to begin the second as the gap grew to 67-41. The Tar Heels reached the 100-point mark on Sayon Keita’s alley-oop slam with 4:41 to go.
North Carolina made rebounding an emphasis after a rough opener on the boards. The Tar Heels secured a 49-42 edge in rebounding as Adams grabbed 11.
The Tar Heels’ second win this week against a Southern Conference opponent went considerably smoother than Monday night’s 80-72 decision against Western Carolina. North Carolina was outscored in the second half of that game, but there was no danger of that on Friday.
North Carolina, which plays its first six games at home under first-year coach Michael Malone, hosts Wyoming on Tuesday.
