Miami Heat All-Star guard Norman Powell could miss multiple weeks with a strained right groin, the team announced Friday.
Powell was injured during the second quarter of Thursday night’s 124-117 road loss against the Philadelphia 76ers. He had three points and three rebounds in 10 minutes before exiting.
Powell was listed as questionable prior to the Thursday game because of the groin issue. MRI results came back on Friday, detecting a Grade 1 strain with the Heat terming Powell as week-to-week.
Powell, 32, will miss at least four games before his status is re-evaluated.
Miami coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters that Powell was cleared by the medical staff prior to the game in Philadelphia.
“It was that one slide against (Tyrese) Maxey and he overextended it,” Spoelstra said. “So that’s the same one that he’s been dealing with.”
Powell leads the Heat with a 22.5 scoring average in his first season with the club. His career high over a full campaign came last season when he averaged 21.8 points in 60 games for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Powell averages 13.9 points over 666 career games (308 starts) with the Toronto Raptors (2015-21), Portland Trail Blazers (2021-22), Clippers (2022-25) and Heat. He has made 1,198 3-pointers at a solid 39.7%.
The Heat also said forward Nikola Jovic (back) will miss Saturday’s home game against the Houston Rockets.
