No. 2 overall draft pick Dylan Harper suffered a left calf strain, the San Antonio Spurs said Monday, with ESPN reporting that the rookie will be sidelined for multiple weeks.
Harper, 19, appeared to be injured while trying to defend the Phoenix Suns’ Nick Richards on a dunk in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against visiting San Antonio. Harper walked to the bench and went to the locker room with medical personnel and general manager Brian Wright.
The Spurs went on to lose for the first time this season, 130-118. Harper had scored 12 points in 11 minutes off the bench before the injury, which an MRI confirmed to be a strain Monday.
The Spurs selected Harper out of Rutgers with the second pick in this year’s draft.
He has yet to start a game but has become San Antonio’s fourth-leading scorer. Harper has averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists in about 23 minutes per game over six contests to start his NBA career.
